Even though it was a late night for the KRS event I knew I had to get up bright and early to hit up the sample sale in Hollywood. They were practically giving shit away. T-shirts for 5-10 dollars, nice sweaters for 15. Vinyl was nearly half off!!  Coffe in hand I vetured into cinespace which is some sort of club which was awsome becaus they had a fully stocked bar so you could drank and shop. All of the vendors were really friendly and quite informative. I was a little dissapoited because I could tell a lot of stuff had sold out the prior day, but the atmosphere made up for the anythin lacking.

Special big shout out to the boys at the armory my fave clothing gear store, those guys always seem to be grinnin about somethin’.(maybe its all the hustlin they do. haha) Another shout out to JoJo from Backside Records, he fully helped me out, gave me a one on one about starting my first crate collection.  We talked a bit about music I liked, and he hand picked records he thought I would enjoy. He gave me a great deal and welcomed me to come in to the shop anytime even just to chat. Backside is also having a relaunch in April, look out for that. KRS-1 at Karma Lounge

Geez this month is moving by soooo fast, but I didn’t mind that this weekend came so quickly. I new that in store was a memorable concert. KRS-1 perfomed at Karma nightclub in Ventura. A man of much knowledge blessed the people with his music and words. With lots of gret opening emcees, KRS’s performance was highly anticipated and the whole crowd was buzzin’. Everyone was really chill but I was so excited I thought I might jump outta my skin. As KRS stepped onto the stage the crowd got livid, and you could feel the energy level go straight up and penetrate everything surrounding. After a few opening songs a b-boy cypher started and you know I had to get in and rep some b-girls along with another chica who held the floor down. KRS paused in the middle of the show to drop some knowlege about peace and mindfullness abouth our surroundings. That mans words were heavy. He also gave a shout out to all forms of Hip hop and empowered everyone to create peace for our future.

The sweet and lowdown hosted by the deck jams was an exciting event to say the least. It had a raw house party vibe. The location was in a 2 story warehouse like facility. The lighting was dim for the most part and the cypher was lit with a spot light. In a word the ambiance was dope. At the door I was greeted by a friendly young man who was talkative and fun. He let me know that the battles wouldnt start until after the Superbowl and there would be open cypher circles until then.

A little clip of the show

The part of Sweet and Lowdown that got me goin’ was the free beer (via a keg) and chips. (Who doesnt love that?) Also, I loved the fact that 2 girls repped in the prelims of the battle for 500 bills. They both held their on in their rounds and I’d have to give them madd props for being the only two females to get down.

My only gripe about the show??? There was a little scuffle in the second round battles that was totally un-callled for. You could tell when the battle began the tension was hella thick. One crew member shoved an opposing crew member to the ground and out of retaliation someone else shoved him and it turned out into a lot of lame drama involving the majority of the crowd. Which I wanted nothing to do with. Isn’t hip-hop about giving respect to get it? (and vice-versa)

Here is a little footage, you decide for yourself.

This little incident just gives fuel to the fire for those who deem hip-hop, violent, drug-related and thugs-like. So lets keep it together people, self-restraint is a valuable thing.

Peace

3 Kings Chula Vista

It was a massive weekend for San Diego hip-hop. With legendary mastermind of Freestyle session Cros1 turnin’ the big 33 and the 3 kings b-boy competition going down, there was bound to be fireworks.

3 Kings battle showed why San Diego is the place to be for b-boys, more specifically Chula Vista. With dj Maneone takin’ lead on the turntables and Sunk Roc ownin’  the mic the 3 on 3 battle was a success.

All the crews came out in full effect. We had Sopitos con Huevos, Rock So Fresh, Cypher city kings, Uncomfortably Fresh, and Legendary Steps just to name a few. They came out to show who was king of the cypher. But the final came down to an 8 minute battle between Rock So Fresh and Legendary Steps. Both crews slaughtered their competition in the preliminary rounds. With Rock So Fresh killin’ all the beatz and Legendary Steps blowin’ up all their power moves all day long, sparks were bound to fly in the final round. Ding ding!! Rock So Fresh pulled it out in the end takin’ home the title of 3 kings and the cash.
