Sweet & Lowdown hosted by The Deck Jams
The sweet and lowdown hosted by the deck jams was an exciting event to say the least. It had a raw house party vibe. The location was in a 2 story warehouse like facility. The lighting was dim for the most part and the cypher was lit with a spot light. In a word the ambiance was dope. At the door I was greeted by a friendly young man who was talkative and fun. He let me know that the battles wouldnt start until after the Superbowl and there would be open cypher circles until then.
A little clip of the show
The part of Sweet and Lowdown that got me goin’ was the free beer (via a keg) and chips. (Who doesnt love that?) Also, I loved the fact that 2 girls repped in the prelims of the battle for 500 bills. They both held their on in their rounds and I’d have to give them madd props for being the only two females to get down.
My only gripe about the show??? There was a little scuffle in the second round battles that was totally un-callled for. You could tell when the battle began the tension was hella thick. One crew member shoved an opposing crew member to the ground and out of retaliation someone else shoved him and it turned out into a lot of lame drama involving the majority of the crowd. Which I wanted nothing to do with. Isn’t hip-hop about giving respect to get it? (and vice-versa)
Here is a little footage, you decide for yourself.
This little incident just gives fuel to the fire for those who deem hip-hop, violent, drug-related and thugs-like. So lets keep it together people, self-restraint is a valuable thing.
Peace

thanks for the review! we’re definitely trying to change things up a bit in the scene (by actually bringing back elements and ideas of the past), and i think the result has been rather positive.
obviously sometimes things get heated, but i think for being as intense as bboying is, most people restrain themselves pretty well. it still ended up being a good jam and i’m glad the enjoyable.
our next jam, “Scoop” is this Sunday, March 29th. It’s another 2v2 for $500, free beer, and of course a few Deck surprises…
